THOUGHTS FROM A WORK AT HOME MOM
When my son Ben turned two last year, I began thinking about going back to work. My husband and I both agreed the extra money would help; and truthfully, I needed something more for myself. Something beyond diapers and positive discipline. I had worked hard in college and graduate school, and it seemed a waste not to be able to somehow put to use skills I had honed in the previous 9 years. I had been an Executive Recruiter at a global software company before we started our family. I loved being a parent, but I missed being part of a team working towards a common goal. Part-time options, I quickly discovered, were few and far between. I knew, though, that I did not want to get locked into a full-time, year round position that had no flexibility.
When a friend told me about American Workforce and Army of Moms, I was thrilled. What a brilliant idea to tap into all the skills and potential out there in the at-home workforce! When I contacted them, I found the staff professional, accessible and very helpful. I sent them my resume, target hourly rate, and spelled out how many hours per day and week I would be interested in working. They also wanted three references who could speak to my skills. This background work was done promptly and soon I was part of their team.
A week later, I got my first opportunity with American Workforce -- I was back at work! The following month, I was promoted and began a more visible, client-facing role. It felt great to use my skills, be making money, and contributing on a wide variety of searches for companies across the country. I love the diversity of work that comes my way; I love the flexible hours; I love being able to work when I want, for how long I want. After my son goes to bed at 7:30, and the house quiet, I sit at my home office and can focus for hours without being interrupted by excessive emails, phone calls, and colleagues stopping into my office. Then, when my client logs onto their computer in the morning, my work is already waiting for them in their inbox.
American Workforce has put my skills to great use, while allowing me the freedom to organize my life in a way that works for my family. I can work harder and much more efficiently on my own terms, delivering the highest quality of work for our clients.
